The Power of One

Dear Reader: A few weeks ago, I was watching the news and saw a clip from what I believe was the G8 summit. When it comes to these political forums, I get confused as to what happens and how often they occur.

The clip got my attention was when one of the world leaders stood up and declared that the Devil had arrived at the conference (referring to George W. Bush) and that the area still smelled like sulfur after he left. The same leader then went on to blame President Bush for the evils of the world, which, naturally, is par for the course especially if you are the Devil.

Back to the guy who labeled Bush. What struck me was the degree of conviction this person had proclaiming Bush the Devil and placing the sole responsibility on him for the atrocities of the world. Listening to him, I wished that rather than just witnessing this scapegoating session, someone would have spoken up about the power of the individual, and not just from a dignitary perspective. Let me break this down further.

This man was screaming at Bush. Whether or not he was right or wrong is a mute point. You can agree with him or not agree. You can call as many people Satan as you want whether you are a politician or not. What is clear is that this approach to problem-solving makes for a great exercise in futility for some and cheap entertainment for others. If we really want to stop the name calling and put an end to war and destruction, we must acknowledge on a global scale that the power to do so does not rest with our Heads of State: The power to do so is within us.

World leaders seem to get together far more often than they used to - you would think that would mean more solutions more often, but the world seems to be getting more dangerous rather than safe. There is more money being poured into national security yet we feel more insecure. How come?

Basically, it's simple. When I talk about the power of one, I'm referring to us and you, the reader and the writer. If we're going to create a climate of safety, it has to begin at home first, not abroad. Creating a spiritual existence, life, planet, Garden of Eden, global peace, call it what you want, depends first on cultivating inner peace and then mastering it so that it spreads into our relationships with others. We must evolve to such a degree of inner sophistication that we are living with the perception "GLOBALLY", with an awareness that to treat others, regardless of their appearance and belief system, from a place of anywhere but compassion is destructive in and of itself. And this is not impossible. After reading this, however, you may be feeling like it is too much to take on; and perhaps it is. But to NOT do so...we're seeing the results of this. To do so only requires a starting point, and that, dear reader, is just one simple act of kindness.
